Harare beneficiaries receive keys to new homes

Today, 9 March 2023, City officials handed over keys to new Breaking New
Ground (BNG) homes to 16 beneficiaries of its R85 million Harare Infill Phase 2
housing project in Khayelitsha.
The City's Mayoral Committee Member for Human Settlements, Councillor Malusi Booi, and other officials within the Human Settlements Directorate handed over keys to the most recent beneficiaries of the R154,4 million Harare Infill housing project in Khayelitsha earlier today, 9 March 2023.
'This project will provide opportunities to 900 qualifying beneficiaries, and to date almost 780 houses have been completed and handed over to beneficiaries. Phase 1, which consists of 417 units, was completed during December 2022. All of the units have been handed over to beneficiaries. Phase 2 consists of 483 units and to date more than 360 units have been completed and handed over to qualifying beneficiaries. The project is expected to be completed in June 2023.
'The City thanks the project teams and contractors for their hard work and dedication in helping us provide homes to the beneficiaries, especially during this challenging time. The City is doing its utmost to ensure beneficiaries receive their opportunities at our subsidised and affordable housing projects across the metro while ensuring staff and contractors are protected while on duty. We have enhanced security and increased monitoring at City housing projects so that we can deliver opportunities to some of the most vulnerable and poor residents in the city.
'We thank the community for their ongoing support and we will do what it takes to deliver housing opportunities despite the many challenges. The City's six-point plan is in action to help reduce the incidents of violence, criminality, and extortion at our housing projects which is threatening our affordable housing projects. We urge the community to be our eyes and ears and to assist us by reporting any illegal activity at City housing projects in their areas. The City is offering rewards of R5 000 for information leading to arrests of anyone targeting City housing projects across the metro,' said Councillor Booi.
